Spatially distributed rainfall-runoff models can be a useful tool to this end, since they are potentially able to simulate the river flow at any location of the watershed drainage network. However, it is not fully clear to what extent these models 5 can provide reliable simulations over a wide range of spatial scales. This issue is investigated here by applying a spatially distributed, continuous simulation rainfall-runoff model to infer the flood frequency distribution of the Riarbero Torrent. This is an un-gauged mountain creek located in northern Italy, whose drainage area is 17 km 2. The results were checked by using estimates of the peak river flow obtained by applying a 10 classical procedure based on hydrological similarity principles. The analysis highlights interesting perspectives for the application of spatially distributed models to ungauged catchments.

Confidence intervals for a spatially generalized, continuous simulation flood frequency model for Great Britain

[1] There is growing interest in the application of ‘‘continuous simulation’’ conceptual rainfall-runoff models for flood frequency estimation as an adjunct to event-based or statistical design methodology. The approach has advantages that stem from the use of models with continuous water balance accounting. Conceptual rainfall-runoff models usually require calibration, which in turn requires g...

Derivation of a curve number and kinematic-wave based flood frequency distribution

The physically-based flood frequency models use readily available rainfall data and catchment characteristics to derive the flood frequency distribution. In the present study, a new physically-based flood frequency distribution has been developed. This model uses bivariate exponential distribution for rainfall intensity and duration, and the Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number (SCS-CN) metho...

Spatial Analysis of Flood Hazard in Nirchay River Basin Using HEC-HMS Model and and fuzzy logic

Floods are one of the most abundant and destructive natural disasters that every year are caused heavy losses of life and property. Due to human activity in river systems and construction in rivers, flood damage has an upward trend. One of the most important actions to reduce flood damage is the provision of flood hazard zoning maps and their use in spatial planning. In this study, the risk of ...

Investigation of MISDc model performance to simulate runoff in Kashkan Afrine basin in Lorestan province

Today, increase in flood frequency and intensity, and flash flood events have caused environmental issues and increased human and economic losses. As a result, numerous tools and new programs for flood forecasting systems and risk management programs are being used in the relevant period. There are models that make it easy to be used for this purpose. In this research, MISDc model was applied t...

Flood Hydrograph Simulation with Uncertainty in Rainfall - Runoff Parameters

Flood hydrograph simulation is affected by uncertainty in Rainfall – Runoff )RR( parameters. Uncertainty of RR parameters in Gharasoo catchment, part of the great Karkheh river basin, is evaluated by Monte–Carlo (MC) approach. A conceptual-distributed model, called ModClark, was used for basin simulation, in which the basin’s hydrograph was determined using the superposition of runoff generated...
